Newton's Colour Circle

This is Newton's diagram of the colours of the spectrum.  He worked extensively with the spectrum in his investigation of colour and colour perception.   He could see as well as anyone that the spectrum is linear.  His genius lay in his realisation that the red and violet ends of the spectrum have similarities.   Hence his representation of the spectrum as a colour circle.
The capital letters are his attempt to relate the colours to the seven musical notes of the diatonic scale.

"Roy G. Biv" is the mnemonic for the Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo and Violet colours that Newton saw in the spectrum.
